How IGICUMBI
SACCO NYANZA took shape.
IGICUMBI’s story begins with Nyanza’s sector savings and credit cooperatives coming together in a single district SACCO.
The district report describes the aims of consolidation: better management, stronger protection of members’ savings and easier access to services. These were the objectives stated at the time.

The name and bylaws
Members were introduced to the district SACCO’s bylaws and the approved name, IGICUMBI SACCO NYANZA.
Leadership elected at that assembly
The report names NIYITEGEKA Eric as elected President, BYUKUSENGE Regine as Vice-President and NSENGIYUMVA Noel as Secretary.

WHAT IS A SACCO?
Savings and credit,
rooted in membership.
A SACCO is a savings and credit cooperative. Participation, sound records and shared decision-making matter to cooperative life. Ask for the SACCO’s bylaws to understand your rights and responsibilities.
A SACCO in every sector.
In December 2008, the National Dialogue recommended at least one SACCO in each sector to bring savings and financial services closer to residents.
The programme takes shape.
The Umurenge SACCO programme was rolled out from 2009. RCA’s archive records the names of ten sector SACCOs in Nyanza.
A step towards digital records.
On 10 June 2024, MINECOFIN announced that all 416 sector SACCOs had been automated and described the programme for consolidation at district level.
Sector SACCOs come together.
On 6 November 2025, the district reported approval of the IGICUMBI name and election of its leadership.

The district announcement records a 2025 milestone. The legal founding date and consolidation instrument still need documentary confirmation from the SACCO.
